Who we are
My name is Matt Berg, I am a 5th generation resident of this area. As a boy growing up on a farm just north of Charlevoix, I was introduced to chainsaws and logging at an early age. At the age of 14, we cut cedar fence posts in the winter and carried them out of area swamps BY HAND to earn a little money come spring. At the age of 17, I went to work for Weaver Logging in Fairview, MI - felling grade and veneer trees for a few years in the winters while coming home to grow produce in the summers. At the age of 20, I did my first volunteer trip with Eight Days of Hope, a disaster relief organization that helps clean up the mess after hurricanes and tornadoes. It was there that I fell in love with the tree removal side of cutting. Most anyone could fall a tree in the middle of a field, but successfully falling a tree surrounded by hazards calls for a special set of skills to accomplish the job safely. Eight Days of Hope also taught me many valuable lessons outside of tree work - to listen to the homeowner, to really care for others, to strive to do what I said I would do, and also to say no when I wasn’t confident I could complete the job. 20 years later, I still value the friendships and education that Eight Days of Hope gave me. I hope that some day you and I can meet and I can show you what it means when we say “Atlas Cares”!
